Abstract
Energy resources are vital for Nigeria’s economic
growth. However, energy usage also has implications for sustainable development
via resource sustainability and environmental safety. Thus, it is imperative to
assess the sustainability of any energy-induced growth in an economy. This
study, therefore, uses a simple but robust estimation technique to examine the
impact of energy usage on sustainable development in Nigeria using time series
data spanning 1990 to 2023. The study estimates two models, including an
aggregated model and a model that disaggregates energy consumption into renewable
and non-renewable energy to determine which energy type has the most profound
impact on sustainable development in the country. The findings show that
aggregated energy consumption cannot significantly drive sustainable
development because of the disproportionate dominance of non-renewable energy
in the total energy profile of the country. The results further show that
non-renewable energy sources are detrimental to sustainable development, while
renewable energy sources can propel the country toward sustainable development.
This study, therefore, advocates that Nigeria should rejig its energy mix
through policies to increase the proportion of renewable energy in its total
energy mix.
